Part of this comes from my music selection—typically longer works by John Cage—and part of it is from my own close attention and awareness. I think I was originally influenced by minimalist composer Philip Glass, who often lets a motif flutter away, and then sends after it several more, over time, until you can’t pick out any one of them, like trying to spot a crow among its fellow crows.

I’ve expanded my awareness to other areas, such as eating. When was the last time you genuinely remembered the bites you took while eating? Eating has become a crutch for the bored, the stressed, and the celebrations of holidays; sometimes we don’t even remember how much we ate, or what we ate.

I’m guilty of this, but lately I’ve discovered that I own a stomach, and it has a rhythm. When it gives me that sensation of hunger, I provide it with some nutritive substance that is fulfilling. When I am full, I stop eating. I repeat this process, and it works pretty well.

We should be aware of our stomach just as closely as our lungs and heart—our breaths and heartbeats, respectively. They are all timekeepers—the stomach, the lungs, and the heart—and if we could develop a sense for their ticking, we might be richer. Most people don’t think about their breathing very often, unless they are vigorously exercising, but it would do them well, especially since sometimes they don’t know until they’re practically hyperventilating.

This is part of panic attacks—when your body goes into overtime, whether in your lungs, heart, or stomach, it’s time to do something. Of course, activities like exercise purposely push the lungs and heart, positively, but if you take a couple minutes after this article and really think about your breathing, you can slow down and let the heavy details of the moment ease into clarity. You can do the same thing with the beating of your heart, and the sensations of the stomach. It all sounds kind of New Age, but it really does work.

Too often, eating has nothing to do with fulfilling feelings of hunger. Social gatherings often require eating, and we may have eaten 3 turkey dinners before we realize what we just put in our bodies. Holidays, especially, have been shrouded with food and its packaging. It seems that because a particular candy matches the color scheme of a holiday, then we should be eating it at that moment.

I thought I chiefly remembered Halloween being a candy-based holiday, but it appears that every day of celebration has its own campaign for food. And, fittingly, every themed item is suddenly and extensively on sale. How much must we eat to satisfy a holiday’s demands? Well, usually past the point of being full, has been my experience.

If you were suddenly overwhelmed by an inability to breathe regularly, you would probably be concerned. Your body is just as clearly telling you something when you achieve that feeling of fullness after a meal or snack. Many (cheap) foods are not wholesome—pretzels, chips, cookies—you just keep eating because there’s so much sodium, sugar, and/or fat. Crucially, there’s little unsaturated fat or fiber, which are helpful in feeling full and satisfying the body. The same thing happens with sodas—empty calories and high fructose corn syrup have a way of never really doing anything--even a beverage’s chief purposes, which are to satisfy our thirst and aid in digestion, have been lost. It’s really just a tease for the body, and sometimes it’s worse.

One would do better to eat an apple and drink some water or low-fat milk. Many varieties of apples are available, and most are delicious. Switch out processed sweets with natural sweets—you will actually acquire some fiber and nutrients. The reason most fruits and vegetables don’t advertise benefits is because they are assumed.

It’s not hard to listen to our stomachs, or to tell if something we’re about to eat is unhealthy or too much for a single human. Recently, I’ve slowed down my eating, as a whole, to savor it. If you are cramming in several bites at the same time, you are probably not appreciating it.

It’s tough because foods, along with every other element in America, has been shoved ahead, and expected to become faster and more convenient. It’s always there, it’s fast, and it’s easy. Foods that may have been vaguely time-consuming, like cereal, have been reduced to packaged bars or bites. What’s wrong with taking time to appreciate spoonfuls of cereal?

We are also bloating our foods as we do our stomachs. Breakfast has become a match for lunch and afternoon snacks because we have been told that it’s the most important meal of the day. What was a bagel with jelly or cream cheese has been lifted to a stacked, fried bagel sandwich, where you can get a muffin and doughnut free, and unnecessarily sweet and caloric coffee concoctions. Chocolate (usually too fatty and sweet to make up for the oft-praised anti-oxidants) has managed to permeate every meal, snack, and side dish in the spectrum.

It all comes back to slowing down and being aware. Not just aware that it tastes good, but what you’re putting in your mouth, and if your stomach agrees that you should be doing so. Did you really need a bagel sandwich, a muffin, and a coffee/chocolate drink? Switching out empty foods with denser, more wholesome foods will make you full faster, and you won’t need to eat as much. Sometimes eating something “bare” (i.e., not covered in cheese, chocolate, sugar, or other similar dressings) can bring us closer. I didn’t used to like almonds (I had to eat them roasted and salted)—but now, I eat raw, natural almonds, and I love them.

If we are aware of our breathing, our heart beating, and our eating, we will naturally slow down and appreciate that new exercise regimen or meal. All the little details will be magnified. It’s easy to get lost in the swirl of a rapid, unblinking American life (especially visually), but if we can just be aware once and a while, we might find something we never knew was there.

N.Y. Public Radio talks more, puts people to sleep

In early October, 2009, WQXR, the New York Times-owned classical radio station moved into the hands of New York Public Radio, WNYC, and switched from 96.3 FM to 105.9 FM. A shakeup of the WNYC schedule occurred: WNYC, at 93.9 FM and 820 AM, is now chiefly talk shows, and the excellent music portions of the stations unwillingly snapped into the mold of the former WQXR.

I used to listen to WQXR, but generally found a play list of traditional and soporific classical music. Commercials were terrible, trying to convince you to choose your shiny casket or the “Weekender” from the N.Y. Times (or both). Every introduction to the next musical selection was marred with a condescending and tight tone, as if maybe you weren’t smart enough to be listening in the first place. What did you know about the movements of that Mozart symphony, anyway?

THEN…

For musical purposes, I stayed with WNYC and its Evening Music (E.M.) program, which generally aired on weeknights from 7 to 11 PM. During the week, Terrance McKnight hosted, with a large helping of Philip Glass, David Lang, and Terry Riley, and a sprinkling of composers I had simply never heard of. Engaging bits of biographical or musical information wrapped around this music, forming a tight show. I looked forward to hearing at least part of E.M. after work.

On Friday, and through the weekend, David Garland hosted E.M. with a smart ear for music and discussions that pushed you happily into the solo experience of radio. Garland also hosts Spinning On Air (more on this later). On Friday nights at 10 PM was a segment called Movie Music, with soundtracks, new and old. What was behind the visuals suddenly came out, and was freely played for the listeners. To be fair, Movie Music is still on (now clunkily called Movies on the Radio), Saturdays at 9 PM on WQXR.

To lose track of time on E.M. was infectious—I remember falling, but strapped in on a fantastical ride, for the dark and dazzling music of Music for Falling From Trees, by Peter Broderick. Or, the sweet, soft tones of Valentin Silvestrov‘s Bagatellen series were unforgettably beautiful.

NOW…

But those moments have passed, since the current E.M., now on WQXR, has been refaced with what their website calls “[. . .] the ‘best of the best’ of the classical music core [. . . ]” (i.e., the old WQXR). It’s like a loop of those bargain bin “The Most Beautiful Classical Music of the World” CDs. I can’t say I’m excited to hear that when I get home.

What seems to be a substitution for the modern classical music shade of E.M. is the “Q2,” an Internet stream. Every time I have looked at the currently playing work on WQXR’s website, it doesn’t appear to be much of a substitution, though I have recently been curious to give it more of a chance.

Being broadcast tonight, November 8, 2009, on WNYC and Q2, live at The Greene Space, is a premiere of the American choral version of David Lang’s The Little Match Girl Passion. It’s hosted by John Schaefer, of Soundcheck and New Sounds fame. I’ve been listening to it as I write this, and it’s been rather nice, and intense (a good intense), company. I heard a portion of it on this afternoon’s Choral Fixation program on WQXR (Sundays, from noon to 2 PM); this is an extant piece of WNYC, and was formerly hosted by Terrance McKnight.

I’m going to give Q2 more of a chance over the next couple weeks, even though it is a gigantic waste of energy to run the computer just to listen to the radio.

SO WHAT IS WORTH LISTENING TO?

So what is left on New York Public Radio? As I’ve shifted away from the music programs, I’ve grown to like more talk shows. WNYC, still on 93.9 FM and 820 AM, has added, deleted, and shuffled programs. Looking at the week, it’s too much talk (often of the same topics), but here are my favorites, musical and not, in no particular order:

• Morning Edition / All Things Considered (weekdays: M.E.: 5 – 6 AM on 93.9 FM, 6 – 8 AM on 820 AM / A.T.C.: 4 – 8 PM, with Marketplace; also on weekends from 5 – 6 PM): NPR news standards that I listen (or read online) daily. Check out (the fairly new) http://www.npr.org.

• Spinning On Air (Sundays at 8 PM on 93.9 FM): David Garland’s artful show that “has always been about unusual music,” according to the site. You will hear music and people you’ve never heard, with solid interviews by Garland.

• Le Show (Sundays at 7 PM on 820 AM): Harry Shearer’s dry and sharp show. He is one of the best vocal artists, and you will feel like Principal Skinner from The Simpsons is cracking you up. Listen for his wonderful bits.

• Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! (Saturdays at 11 AM on 93.9 FM and 820 AM; Sundays at 4 PM on 93.9 FM): The best news quiz show, ever. Take this over Whad’Ya Know (Sundays at 6 PM on 820 AM), an ersatz bore-fest.

• On the Media (Saturdays at 7 AM on 93.9 FM, Sundays at 3 PM on 820 AM): What is going on in all the various forms of media, and why it’s important (or not).

• The Sound of Young America (Saturdays at 1 PM on 820 AM, Sundays at 6 PM on 93.9 FM): Jesse Thorn hosts this mixed artist talk show out of his California apartment, with musicians, artists, writers, etc. I’ve heard everything from the cast of The State & Reno 911! to Terry O’Reilly’s The Age of Persuasion on CBC Radio.

• The Splendid Table (Sundays at 9 PM on 93.9 FM): Lynne Rossetto Kasper’s food show is surprisingly good, since I typically don’t enjoy food shows. I’ve picked up morsels of information from this program. People talking about what they know can be interesting.

OTHER NOTABLE SHOWS: It cannot possibly be that every American songbook piece is the “best,” but Jonathan Schwartz’s Saturday and Sunday shows (12 – 4 PM) are still good for that music. On Point, hosted by Tom Ashbrook, out of Boston, is a solid talk show with relevant and variously curious topics (weekdays, 1st hour of the show at 8 PM on 93.9 FM); ditto on Tell Me More, hosted by Michel Martin (weekdays, 2 PM on 820 AM and 9 PM on 93.9 FM) and Fresh Air, hosted by Terry Gross (weekdays, 3 PM on 93.9, except for Fridays and 8 PM on 820 AM).

There’s plenty left in the WNYC schedule for excellent programming, but I hope that either the classic Evening Music returns, or that Q2 is a veritable source of modern classical music. If we have lost that, perhaps my monthly sustainer program for WNYC is not worth the trouble. One look at iTunes’s Classical radio section will prove that “best of the best” classical music is drearily redundant.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://keithtroester.blogspot.com/2009/11/ny-public-radio-talks-more-puts-people.html' title='N.Y. So this is a belated version.

Ensemble ACJW is derived from a program (The Academy) of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute. I saw them (one configuration), for free, at Flushing Town Hall in Flushing, which is part of Queens, New York, on October 25, 2009, at 2 PM. I am a member of Flushing Town Hall, but I am writing this independently.

The program was part of the Carnegie Hall Ancient Paths, Modern Voices series, which concludes November 10th. It's an appreciation of Chinese culture. With this motivation, each English spoken explanation was paired with a Chinese-translated version. For those with no knowledge of Chinese, this was a curious habit--the consonant and consistent tones of Chinese (and many Asian languages) always provide an interesting canvas, and are far prettier than English.

This concert dovetailed nicely with my recent interest in traditional Chinese script, and you will see an illustration celebrating some script in an upcoming Ety.Sketch entry. Illustrating etymologies is a richly rewarding experience. I recently spent some B&N gift card credit on Collins's Chinese and Latin dictionaries, and a Random House Japanese dictionary.

The program opened with a piece by Chen Qigang called "Instants d'un opéra de Pékin for solo piano." Imagine a quiet field where the peace is slowly disturbed by some furtive wild animal--one can be filled with joy and unease simultaneously.

The two strongest pieces were by Guo Wenjing and Zhou Long, with "Parade for Six Peking Opera Gongs, Op. 40" and "Taigu Rhyme for Clarinet, Violin, Cello, and Percussion," respectively.

Wenjing's "Parade" featured David Skidmore, Jared Soldiviero, and John Ostrowski, on percussion. Visually, they stood around a circular conglomeration of percussive instruments, such as Chinese opera gongs. They appeared to be summoning some rhythmic spirit--one of them would play a bit on some instruments, another would play on some more, and then one would hold a gong for another to go two-handed. Each musician held several pairs of sticks or mallets between his fingers at all times, like sharp musical claws.

The opera gong is impressive--the pitch's decay extends and wobbles past the point of contact by the mallet. It's like percussive Jell-O, jiggling around and overlapping with other instruments.

Like the best concerts, you are re-adjusting your view just as much as you are intently listening.

Long's "Taigu Rhyme" was a huge piece, with a large set of drums and gongs, plus woodwind and strings. The slams by the 3 percussionists cascaded through the venue with a cinematic intensity and crunch. The seemingly endless, tenuous clarinet blowing by Sarah Beaty wrapped itself into the strings and tribal drum and gong hits. This isn't Benny Goodman--this is marathon clarinet playing, with incredible agility, speed, and beauty.

I cannot help but bring up the visual similarity between the gongs and the Target bull's-eye logo (one of the sponsors)--red was scattered throughout the drums, too, so it all seemed too connected.

Ensemble ACJW is a cohesive, powerful group of musicians--you could catch them smiling at each other in the midst of this non-Western music, which is refreshing. Several times, you could see the violinist, Joanna Marie Frankel, and the cellist, Nicholas Canellakis, break their bow's strings with their ferocity. From what I understand, more members from The Academy are continually part of Ensemble ACJW, and perform around in different configurations and numbers.

* * *

Carnegie Hall is holding a free Neighborhood Concert Series around New York City well into 2010. See below for the calendar, color-coded by borough, from the brochure. Being print matter, the dates and concerts are subject to change. Check out their page for more information. I would recommend checking these out, especially when everyone is cutting back.

Here are documents from my Scribd account, for the concert, and the Neighborhood Concert Series:

<a title="View Ensemble ACJW - Flushing Town Hall - About on Scribd" href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/22080472/Ensemble-ACJW-Flushing-Town-Hall-About" style="margin: 12px auto 6px; For simplicity, I will probably just post a sample of the video on my YouTube channel. In the background, I'm also constructing a video for the "Conclusion" part of that same quartet.

---

Also, for anyone who was playing Super Nintendo during the early '90s may remember a game called "Out of this World." It was one of those explicitly polygonal-based graphics games, but it was minimalist in its design, with very little speech or words, but chilling cinematic scenes, with an odd little musical score, creepy sound effects, and some unfamiliar creatures who shuffled around mechanically. And it was a tough game to play well.

Anyway, I researched it; it's more commonly called "Another World", and was drawn up, handmade, by Eric Chahi. His creation story hit me because it was fairly low-budget and ultimately conceived from scratch, with a cinematic eye. He is also a talented painter, with his art forming the cover of the game's box. Most, if not all, of my own work is low-budget and handmade, so the parallels are salient. Read about this game and his story here (he also concocted a curious color-coded visualization of his chronology).

Late this week, I'll post my new video for another one of John Cage's Number Pieces. Perhaps not a war, but certainly a disturbance.)

This was from Howard Mansfield's "The Same Ax, Twice: Restoration and Renewal in a Throwaway Age". Mansfield discusses how we remember elements of the past, and what we do to maintain the past, while it is always changing. Now, as I read, he's speaking about house museums where workers are required to "rebuild" the artifacts and memories, and float them, suspended, where they cannot possibly stay immutable. Mansfield, a New Hampshire resident, compacts quotes and brief stories into passionate calls for hope in what is a constant sloughing and decaying of the past.

Last weekend, I worked more on my video for a Morton Feldman piece--I moved along, but I didn't want to rush it, since I began so late in the weekend.

This weekend, I actually would like to jump into my try at Michigan's Mitten Map Competition. I will likely work from a Schoenberg "fragment" piece (about 30 seconds long), which will be a dense half a minute.
